INCREDIBLE NEWS ABOUT THE BIRTH OF A BABY GORILLA IN THE BITUKURA GORILLA FAMILY IN BWINDI IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK

New Gorilla Baby in Bwindi

How fascinating to hear about the birth of a new baby gorilla in the Bitukura gorilla group in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park? This increase in newborn gorillas reaffirms Uganda as the top travel destination for interesting mountain gorilla tours in the world.

The Bitukura gorilla family, from which the baby was born, is in the Ruhija trekking sector.  The birth of this baby gorilla brings the population of mountain gorillas in the Bitukura gorilla group to 14 individuals.

The nursing mother is reported to be in excellent condition according to the group of trackers and park rangers who participated in the trekking activity on October 15th, 2025.

The Bitukura family, where the baby is born, is known for being peaceful and close-knit, and it is being led by the silverback called Mugisha, who is said to be guarding the mother and her baby.

The number of members in the Bitukura family had increased to 24 individuals, but due to some sicknesses and climatic changes, some members died.

The news about the newborn gorilla may mean a comeback and a rise in the number of members in the Bitukura family, which was gradually falling, and this will, in turn, add to the total number of gorillas in Bwindi National Park.

Mountain Gorilla Distribution in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to over 459 mountain gorillas, which is almost one-third of the 1063 individuals remaining in the world.

This population is distributed into the 25 habituated gorilla groups, and of these, only 9 groups are available for gorilla tourism, and 1 group is dedicated to research.

The 25 habituated gorilla groups are divided into four gorilla trekking sectors.

Where To Find Other Mountain Gorillas in The World?

New Gorilla Baby

Though Bwindi Impenetrable National Park remains with the highest number of mountain gorillas in the world, Uganda’s Mgahinga National Park is also home to about 30 mountain gorillas, which makes it another destination for gorilla safaris in Uganda.

Other places in the world include Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, which has 12 habituated gorilla families, and these are worth seeing when on a gorilla safari in Rwanda.

Congo is also home to about 350 mountain gorillas living in Virunga National Park, and these are worth seeing on a Congo gorilla tour for an interesting experience.

What To Expect from The Recent Births in Bwindi National Park?

The birth of a new baby gorilla in the Bitukura gorilla family, together with the recent births, means a general increase in the mountain gorilla population.

With this population of mountain gorillas, Uganda gorilla tours are expected to increase as more visitors will be attracted by the high numbers of these primate species.

Conservation Measures to Practice to Maintain the Increase in Gorillas

To sustain this positive change, Uganda needs to implement the following measures:

  • Monitoring of mountain gorillas to ensure that their health condition is good
  • Putting clear boundaries around the park
  • More effort should be put into routine patrols to control poaching and encroachment on wildlife areas.
  • Encourage community involvement through ecotourism to foster Human-wildlife coexistence.

.         Maintaining the minimum distance recommended to prevent disease transmission and avoid disturbing the behavior of gorillas.

.         Supporting local communities by hiring local guides, buying crafts, to ensure that the locals see the value of protecting gorillas.

Embark on a Uganda gorilla safari specifically in Bwindi National Park and get a chance to see some of the adorable baby gorillas born recently, as well as other gorillas residing there for decades.  On this gorilla trekking safari, you will see nursing gorilla mothers and the rest of the other gentle giants interacting freely in their natural surroundings.
